1,4-Benzene diammonium iodide, more commonly known as BDI, is a chemical compound with the CAS Number 116469-02-4. It is a white, hygroscopic, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and organic solvents. BDI is primarily used as a catalyst in organic chemical reactions, particularly in the manufacture of polymers, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, as well as in the production of dyes, pigments, and other fine chemicals.

The most common application of BDI is as a reagent in the synthesis of organic compounds. It can be used to oxidize organic compounds, such as alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones, to produce aldehydes and ketones. BDI can also be used to oxidize aromatic compounds to produce quinones. BDI has also been used in the synthesis of drugs, such as antimalarials, as well as in the synthesis of dyes and pigments. 

In addition to its use in organic chemistry, BDI is also used in inorganic chemistry, where it can be used to reduce metal ions to their elemental form. It is also used in the synthesis of metal complexes, such as those involving cobalt, copper, and nickel.
